Start with the management-system boundary

ISO IEC 27001 concerns an information security management system, rather than the security of one application alone. Establish which services, locations, information and suppliers the management-system scope covers. A penetration test can contribute evidence about selected technical risks, but the test scope and the certification scope are different records. Show where they overlap and where important systems are assessed through other activities.

Turn risk treatment into test questions

Begin with decisions that matter: whether an internet-facing service exposes customer records, whether an administrator can cross a trust boundary, or whether a change has weakened authentication. Relate each question to the organisation's risk assessment and selected treatment. Avoid choosing targets simply because they appeared in last year's quotation. Record the assumptions and evidence needed to answer the question.

Build a practical certification preparation sequence

Confirm ownership and assets first, then document control responsibilities and evidence. Address obvious configuration or access problems before commissioning deeper validation. Schedule testing early enough to investigate and fix material findings before the relevant assurance deadline. Coordinate with the internal audit and certification timetable rather than assuming a report delivered on the final day can resolve every evidence gap.

Keep scope and authorisation explicit

Describe applications, networks, identities, environments, exclusions, permitted methods and safety limits. Active testing needs explicit written authorisation from the relevant owner. Agree how critical observations are escalated and how supplier-controlled systems are handled. A management-system policy or a customer questionnaire is not, by itself, permission to test a third party's technology.

Create an evidence trail that survives handover

Keep the approved scope, test dates, limitations, report version, remediation decisions and retest evidence together. An auditor or customer should be able to distinguish what was examined from what was excluded. Findings should link to named actions and subsequent evidence, rather than remaining an isolated PDF that cannot be reconciled with the current environment.

Separate technical assurance from certification

A test can reveal weaknesses or provide evidence about the assessed controls at that time. It does not award ISO certification or establish that every part of the management system conforms. The organisation's certification process and certification body remain separate. Use the result to improve risk treatment and to support relevant assurance questions, with the report's scope and limitations intact.
