Treat the mobile service as a connected system

A mobile application is not just an installable file. Document the iOS or Android client, supported operating systems, backend APIs, authentication services, notification services and administrative interfaces. Establish which versions and environments the assessment covers. If the same customer journey uses a website, record whether that separate interface is included or assessed elsewhere.

Specify each platform and delivery prerequisite

An iOS build and an Android build may expose different platform behaviour even when they share business features. Provide the agreed test build, installation route, supported devices, accounts and any necessary debug or instrumentation arrangements. Confirm whether the assessment includes source review. Do not assume access to a public app-store package provides everything needed for the intended depth.

Follow data through the client

Map how sensitive information reaches storage, logs, backups, notifications, clipboard functions and platform integrations. Examine whether the design unnecessarily retains information on the device or exposes it to another application. Decide which data classes require particular attention and use controlled test records. The objective is to understand the information path, not to collect real customer data unnecessarily.

Test identity and server-side authority separately

The client interface can hide a function without preventing a backend request. Include relevant APIs, account roles, tenant boundaries, recovery flows and session behaviour in the agreed assessment. Distinguish device authentication from server-side permission to access a record or perform a transaction. Record which dependencies belong to suppliers and obtain the appropriate testing permission before including them.

Agree operational limits before testing

State whether a production service or representative test environment will be used. Define permitted techniques, rate limits, contact routes, notification controls and stop conditions. Explicit written authorisation is required for active testing. Avoid real payments, destructive transactions or unexpected notifications unless a controlled exercise has expressly included them and the necessary owners have agreed.

Ask for reproducible and prioritised outputs

A useful report identifies the affected platform, build, endpoint and role, explains the business consequence and gives an actionable correction. Retesting should use the relevant fixed build and backend deployment. Confirm the included report, debrief and retest arrangements in the proposal. OWASP MASVS and MASTG provide useful reference points, but a framework name alone does not define the commercial scope.
