Understand the workflow, ownership and platform requirements behind an effective vulnerability-management programme.
Need an acronym translated?Open the cyber glossary →Define the programme before selecting the platform
Vulnerability management is a recurring operating process. It needs an asset boundary, responsible owners, assessment methods, prioritisation criteria and a way to verify change. A platform can organise parts of that workflow, but buying a dashboard does not establish who will assess an issue or implement a fix. Start with the decisions and handovers the programme must support.
Combine discovery with the right assessment methods
External asset discovery helps identify internet-facing systems and unexpected exposure. Internal assessment, cloud configuration review, application testing and software-dependency checks answer other questions. Choose methods according to the estate and risk. An external view cannot establish the complete condition of internal networks, every application workflow or all controls inside a cloud account.
Distinguish candidate signals from validated risk
A banner, suspected version or scanner observation can justify investigation without proving exploitability or business impact. Record the observation, confidence, affected asset and the further evidence required. Where active testing is needed, obtain explicit written authorisation and agree the scope. Keep uncertainty visible so a suspected issue does not become an unsupported confirmed finding through repeated copying.
Prioritise using context and actionability
Technical severity is only one input. Consider exposure, access requirements, asset importance, sensitive data, known exploitation context and available mitigations. Identify the owner who can actually change the affected service. A queue of unowned findings is an operational gap, even if every item has a score. Escalate urgent credible risk without waiting for a periodic reporting meeting.
Close the loop with remediation and retesting
Assign an action, target date and decision owner. Record what was changed, which version or configuration was deployed, and what evidence will demonstrate the fix. Retest material issues within the agreed scope and retain the result beside the original finding. A status changed to closed without supporting evidence is different from a correction that has been checked.
Place Expose and the Portal in that workflow
Pentesys Expose provides authorised external asset discovery, attack-surface monitoring, threat and leaked-data intelligence, and prioritisation. Validate provides separately scoped authorised testing where deeper evidence is needed. The Portal's One Working View connects scope, discoveries, findings, evidence, remediation ownership, retesting and progress reporting. Match those roles to the wider programme rather than assuming one source supplies every vulnerability-management function.
This guide covers the essentials. Continue into our technical analysis for a firmer position, practical implications and recommended action.
